YouTube Premium Price Jumps almost 50% in Sri Lanka After New VAT Hike

Sri Lankan users are facing a steep increase in YouTube Premium subscription fees following the government’s recent implementation of an 18% Value Added Tax (VAT) on online services.

The monthly subscription, which previously cost LKR 629, has now surged to LKR 929 — a nearly 50% hike. This change comes after the government extended VAT to digital and streaming services, impacting platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and others.

The tax adjustment is part of the government’s broader efforts to boost revenue amid ongoing economic challenges. However, many users have voiced concerns over the sudden price surge, especially at a time when digital services are an essential part of daily life.

Sri Lanka joins several other countries in taxing foreign digital platforms, though this latest increase marks one of the sharpest subscription hikes in the region.
